AREA OF CITY Five square miles.
POPULATION The city's year-round population is approximately 35,000; During the summer months, the population swells past 50,000.
GOVERNMENT Five-member City Council; the appointed City Manager is the chief administrator; the barrier island is also part of Nassau County, which is governed by a 19-member elected legislature and an elected County Executive; The city, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach and Lido Beach are in Legislative District Four. Point Lookout has joined its neighbors in District 4, moving from District 19. The unincorporated areas of the island are under the jurisdiction of Hempstead Town, which is governed by an elected council and a supervisor.
BEACH Long Beach boasts five miles of the finest, cleanest sand and safest bathing in the northeast. There is a fee from Memorial Day to Labor Day (see price schedule in Beach Park section). There are also town and county beach parks in Lido Beach and Point Lookout. Admission is free, but there is a per-car parking charge.
BOARDWALK There's a 2.1-mile boardwalk along the ocean which is well-lit in the evening and regularly patrolled by the Long Beach Police Department. There is also a promenade on the bay near the Recreation Center.
HOUSES OF WORSHIP Nearly two-dozen churches and synagogues representing a dozen different faiths.
CLIMATE In the summer, the island is consistently 12-13 degrees cooler than Manhattan and in the winter, it is usually about 10 degrees warmer than the Big Apple.

POLICE/FIRE PROTECTION The Long Beach Fire Department has three stations. The Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department is primarily responsible for the eastern portion of the barrier island. The city is protected by its own police force, which is also assisted at times by the Nassau County Police Department.

TRANSPORTATION Twenty minutes from JFK International Airport, Long Beach has a Long Island Rail Road station, maintains its own local bus service and is also on the county MSBA line. There are two taxi companies whose in-city rates are fixed by the city council.
